On April 16, 2016 at approximately 8:00 pm, 81 year old Martiros Arutyunyan of Glendale was legally crossing Broadway at the intersection of Belmont Street when he was struck by a white sedan. The pedestrian sustained head injuries and later died at the hospital.
The striking vehicle fled the scene and was described by teenage eyewitnesses as a white newer sedan with paper plates driven by a female.
After a very extensive investigation, Glendale Traffic Investigators arrested 67 year old Goar Davtyan of Glendale, on May 13, 2016 for Felony Hit & Run and Felony Vehicular Manslaughter. Ms. Davtyan’s daughter, 41 year old Alina Davtyan of Glendale, was also arrested for Accessory to a Crime and filing a false insurance claim.
On September 20, 2017, Goar Davtyan was charged with one count of Felony Hit and Run Causing Death. Alina Davtyan was charged with one felony count for filing a False Insurance Claim and Accessory to a Crime after the Fact by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
On October 19, 2017, Goar Davtyan was sentenced to three years’ formal probation, 720 hours community service and ordered to pay $300.00 to the Victim’s Restitution Fund. Alina Davtyan was sentenced to three years’ summary probation, 30 days community service and ordered to pay $300.00 to the Victims’ Restitution Fund.
“Our investigators did an outstanding job with this investigation. When involved in a collision of any kind, always remain at the scene. It just makes it so much worse when people panic and flee the scene,” said Sgt. Craig Tweedy. It takes a car over half the distance of a football field to stop when traveling 35 mph with a 2 second perception and reaction time. Both drivers and pedestrians need to account for that distance to prevent a tragic collision.”
