Glendale, California – On July 2, 2018, at approximately 3:00 p.m. Glendale police officers attempted to stop a vehicle, in the area of Colorado Boulevard and the 2 Freeway, for not having any license plates. The vehicle, which was occupied by two males and two females, failed to stop and led the police officers into Eagle Rock. The car finally came to a stop on El Verano Avenue, just north of Colorado Boulevard. The driver, identified as 40 year old Joseph Gutierrez, exited the vehicle and immediately ran from officers. He climbed several fences and ran across the 2 Freeway to evade the officers.
After crossing the freeway, Gutierrez continued to climb fences and run through the backyards of homes in the area. Eventually he hid under a house on the 500 Block of Lincoln Avenue in Glendale. With the help of the K-9s, the Glendale police officers were able to confirm the home under which Gutierrez was hiding. Gutierrez refused to surrender or come out from under the house. Multiple resources were called to the area to attempt to negotiate with Gutierrez. However, after several hours all attempts to negotiate with Gutierrez failed.
Eventually, tear gas was used to force Gutierrez to surrender. At approximately 11:00 p.m. Gutierrez was arrested and charged with several crimes to include burglary and being a felon in possession of ammunition. Gutierrez also had warrants for his arrest for burglary and assault.
The three other passengers in the vehicle were arrested as well. Grecia Carrillo, 28, was arrested and charged with several crimes to include burglary. Carmen Raphael, 37, was arrested and charged with several crimes to include burglary. Jonathan Rendon, 31, was arrested and charged with several crimes to include burglary.
